Disabling Top Navigation in Magento

When you may need to use this?

If you are using only our Toner Data and are not also taking IT categories you may need to make a small change to your Template files to disable the top navigation on your site.

How to proceed

You will need to use a FTP client such as filezilla to access the files on your Magento server:

Open the following folder and file which will be located inside the root directory of your Magento Instillation: app/design/frontend/base/default/layout/page.xml

(Note the path to this file will be different as it will also incorporate the name of your Theme)

Download, rename and save a copy of the file “page.xml” then edit the original file on the server using a programme such as Notepad

Find the below text on the file:

<block type=”core/text_list” name=”top.menu” as=”topMenu” translate=”label”>

<label>Navigation Bar</label>

<block type=”page/html_topmenu” name=”catalog.topnav” template=”page/html/topmenu.phtml”/>

</block>

and replace with:

<!–block type=”core/text_list” name=”top.menu” as=”topMenu” translate=”label”>

<label>Navigation Bar</label>

<block type=”page/html_topmenu” name=”catalog.topnav” template=”page/html/topmenu.phtml”/>

</block–>

Flush the Cache in the back-end of your Magento
